Progressive Boxing behind the Ballroom, P.S. dance lessons on Tuesdays and Fridays upstairs

Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, 7:00pm - 8:36pm
Rachel and Nancy meet at the folliwng location:
Reverand Ray Founder-Martin's, Progressive Amateur Boxing
3212 Dowling, Houston, TX 77004, 713 520 9585
We sat by Princeton's mom, her son a twelve year old boy that has been
training for two months and threw some of the most controlled punches
we saw all night. Princeton's mom bring him daily for training and for
the investment of interest in which the facility gives to help her son
in school and in life by providing help with his homework and
education and builds upon a foundation of spirituality.
We also met Mr. Young, two years short of sixty, originally from New
York, divorced, a political activist of sorts, a spiritual person that
is willing to share a his life story as we walk to our cars. He
concluded with a tale of the IRS and how socialized medicine is not
the solution to our current problems in the US. In fact, Mr. Young
also known in the 80's as "the 5th-ward hustler," can be found most
days around the boxing building as the maintenance crew. Point is, I
don't think that will be the last time we meet up with Mr. Young, in
fact he promised to have a street name for us the next time we met
up.
The boxing itself, amazing!!! Everyone who participated in a match
received a metal and a short ceremony of encouragement for their
futures.
There were sugar and chocolate chip cookies along with lemon-aid
provided.
some visual interest:
bunching bags
the ring
movement of each boxer
trophy cabinet
black and white documentary style photographs
a TV that was on during the match (professional boxers match was on)
the directions of the ref, "stop," "when I say stop I mean stop"
hand gestures
